A sex offender from Barking has avoided jail after thrusting his groin into a 15-year-old girl on the tube.

Lirim Nela, 33, of Pickering Road, shoved his crotch into a young woman’s back while on-board a Central Line train near Leyton in July 2018.

The victim turned around and confronted him and a member of the public also intervened to suggest she contact the police.

Plain-clothed British Transport Police officers later saw Nela observing women at Oxford Circus Understation station in October 2018.

He boarded a train and pushed his groin into a 15-year-old girl who was with a group of friends.

Nela was also seen touching himself inappropriately over his tracksuit bottoms on a number of occasions before officers removed him from the service.

Officers arrested him and he was interviewed through an Italian interpreter. In the interview, he denied sexually assaulting the girl and claimed witnesses were mistaken.

The 33-year-old later pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual assault at Inner London Crown Court on Wednesday, 28 April.

He was given a suspended prison sentence, issued a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order and ordered to pay both victims £500 at the same court on Friday, 28 May.

Nela will also be on an electronically monitored curfew between the hours of 7pm and 5am for five months.

BTP Detective Constable, Ming-Xia Powell, said: “Nela’s behaviour was odious and wholly unacceptable – he imposed himself upon two separate victims for his own sexual gratification.

“I would like to personally thank the victims for assisting the investigation. Their help was vital in bringing him to justice.

“I would urge anyone subjected to, or witness to, unwanted sexual behaviour on the railway to report it to us – no report is too small or insignificant and we will always take you seriously.

“To do this, please text 61016 or call 0800 40 50 40. In an emergency, always dial 999.”
