The pedestrian, from Chelmsford, was crossing the street in Ongar Road when he collided with a blue Mini Cooper shortly after 10.45pm on Saturday, 3 July.
He was rushed to hospital where he sadly passed away almost two weeks later on Thursday, 15 July.
Police arrested a 27-year-old man from Brentwood on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and driving while unfit through drink or drugs.
The suspect was released under investigation while officers continued their enquiries.
Detectives are now appealing for anyone who witnessed the moments leading up to the collision, or who has any dashcam footage, to contact the Serious Collision Investigation Unit on CollisionAppeal@essex.pnn.police.uk
