Emergency services responded to reports of a casualty on the track at 4pm yesterday afternoon.
Despite the efforts of paramedics, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident is not being treated as suspicious and British Transport Police will prepare a file for the coroner.
Train services on the c2c line between Upminster and Barking were disrupted for several hours.
