A Romford shopping centre has sponsored a local girls’ football team that is based in Hornchurch.

The Mercury Mall is backing the Tigers Girls U13 Whites who are part of Tigers Junior Football Club. It is one of the largest expanding clubs in Essex for girls’ grassroots football.

Tigers have football teams for both girls and boys and provide training at their girls’ development centre which runs every Saturday morning for all ages. It is headed by club chairman Keith Di Palma.

“The girls play matches weekly and train twice a week and are part of the BCFA Youth League, ” said Gemma Brooks, marketing and tenant liaison at The Mercury.

“They beat last year’s league winners on Sunday finishing 2-1 the first time wearing the new kit, let’s hope the kits bring them a lucky streak for the rest of the season!”

Gemma explained The Mercury is a “community-focused shopping centre” and is “proud to support a local girls’ football team”.

“Tigers does so much good for our local community whether that’s inspiring young people to develop their skills or providing food for local foodbanks, and it was great to hear the girls associate The Mercury as a place they visit to shop and enjoy the cinema with family and friends,” she added.

Tigers Junior Football Club has recently been shortlisted for a London-wide award and nominated for the London Sport Awards 2021 for its Tigers Futures programmes which help young people become coaches and referees.

The winners of the London Sport Awards, sponsored by the City of London Corporation, will be announced during an in-person ceremony held at the Guildhall on Monday, 6 December.

Paul Vincent, head coach for the girls, said: “As coaches, we’re here to develop the girls as footballers and young people. We enjoy seeing players develop, progress, and share our passion, sharing our enjoyment, love and understanding of the game with them.

“We would like to establish ourselves as an eleven a side girls team playing football the right way, in a predominantly boys league with some girls playing up a year to do so.”
