Three vehicles collided on the road near junction 29 for the M25 and Upminster at around 3pm this afternoon.
The Met Police, London Ambulance Service and London Fire Brigade were all called to the scene.
A woman, believed to be 80-years-old, was rushed to hospital by air ambulance and is believed to be in a life-threatening condition.
Another woman was taken to hospital as a priority and a man was taken to hospital as well.
“We sent multiple resources, including three ambulance crews, two medics in cars, two incident response officers, an advanced paramedic, and a hazardous area response team,” said a spokesperson for the London Ambulance Service.
Drivers are asked to avoid the area and find alternative routes while the road is closed.
