Police are investigating both fires after two men died

Two men have died following two separate fires in east London on New Year’s Eve.

During the first incident, firefighters rescued a man from a blaze at a two-storey house in Swedenborg Gardens, in Wapping.

A second man had already escaped from the burning building before they arrived at around 3.35pm.

Both men were treated at the scene and taken to hospital where one of them later died.

The fire was brought under control by 4.50pm.

Meanwhile, 40 firefighters tackled another blaze at a workshop in Southwold Road, in Hackney, at around 4pm.

They managed to find one man inside the building and brought him to safety. He was rushed to hospital where he died.

Firefighters from Hornchurch, Stoke Newington, Homerton, Tottenham, Islington and Holloway helped extinguish the fire by 4.45pm.

The Metropolitan Police and London Fire Brigade are investigating both fires.
