Havering Council to vote on plans for new sixth form in Rainham

Havering Council is expected to approve plans to build a new sixth form in Rainham this evening.

The three-storey building would replace a disused swimming pool at Harris Academy, in Lambs Lane South.

It would provide state of the art facilities, such as modern lecture halls and learning spaces, for around 400 students across two year groups.

Council documents show the curriculum will primarily be centred on A levels but CTEC’s in business studies, health, social care and sport will also be available.

They also state there is a real need for the site as it takes students 43 minutes by bus to reach the closest current option, Havering Sixth Form.

Construction company ISG has been commissioned to build the £13 million sixth form.

They previously said members of the public will be able to use the site to hold exercise classes and other events.

There are also plans for tree planting and “enhanced landscaping” to improve the overall quality of the site.

Nearly 200 nearby properties were sent letters about the plans. Around 150 said they support the scheme while eight did not because they were worried about an increase in traffic and anti-social behaviour.

Havering Council’s Strategic Planning Committee will meet to discuss the proposals at 7pm today. Planning officers have recommended they approve the proposals.
