Part of a restaurant and an apartment above it caught fire in Longbridge Road at around 7.25pm yesterday.
Fire crews from Barking, Ilford, East Ham and Plaistow managed to bring the blaze under control by 9pm.
There were no reports of any injuries.
There was severe traffic congestion in the area as Longbridge Road was closed from the Fanshaw roundabout to Salisbury Avenue.
The London Fire Brigade is investigating the cause of the blaze.
