Boris Johnson investigating Romford hospital’s ‘critical’ oxygen supply

Dame Margaret Hodge raised concerns over the oxygen supply at Romford’s Queen’s Hospital

Boris Johnson is investigating the oxygen supply at Queen’s Hospital after an MP claimed there may not be enough to go around.

Dame Margaret Hodge told the Prime Minister the Romford hospital “is facing critical pressures” during Prime Minister’s Questions yesterday.

Speaking via video-link from her living room, the Barking MP said: “Demand for oxygen is running at 100% or more of the supply available.

“Will the Prime Minister assure me and my constituents that action is being taken to ensure a safe and secure supply of oxygen?

“And can he tell me what contingency plans he has in place so that hospitals aren’t overwhelmed and closed, critically ill patients aren’t moved, and every patient receives the right amount of oxygen when they need it?”

Mr Johnson replied he would “immediately look into the matter she raises about oxygen at Queens Hospital” and get back to her.

On Twitter the Labour MP accused him of giving “no clear answer” but added she looked forward to a more detailed response.

The hospital’s chief medical officer Magda Smith said: “Our hospitals, like those across the entire NHS, are under significant pressure and our staff are working extremely hard to care for patients while dealing with some of the highest Covid-19 infection rates in London.

“This means our oxygen supply is under increasing demand. We’re ensuring patients are receiving adequate levels of oxygen while also managing flow.

“We have not stopped oxygen for any patients who need it and this is reviewed regularly.

“It’s more important than ever that we all do our bit to reduce transmission of Covid-19 and I appeal to everyone across our communities; I understand it’s difficult, however, please follow all the current guidelines for social distancing, wearing your masks and not mixing with anyone outside your household.

“We need your help to turn the tide against this virus.”
