Ilford town centre receives extra £500,000 grant

Space Studios, a hub for local artists, has opened at Ilford Town Hall as part of the renovation plans

Plans to renovate Ilford town centre have received a further £500,000 in funding.

The Greater London Authority (GLA) has awarded the grant to support Redbridge Council’s plans to create a Cultural Quarter as part of an ‘Ilford for All’.

They hope to revitalise the town centre by bringing art and industry together to generate economic activity and create more opportunities for work.

Leader of Redbridge Council, Councillor Jas Athwal, said: “This additional funding will support our plans to transform Ilford town centre into a thriving shopping and socialising hub for local people to visit and enjoy.

“We want to work with local communities, residents and businesses to revitalise the area, making it greener, cleaner and more sustainable, with beautiful town squares, public art and exciting local shops.”

The project had already received a £1.8 million grant from the GLA.

The additional funding will help towards improving public spaces, creatively making use of empty spaces and enhancing accessibility in and around Ilford through lighting and art.

Deputy Leader of Redbridge Council, and Cabinet Member for Finance, Leisure and Culture, Councillor Kam Rai, said: “We’re investing in our town centre, making it more accessible, greener and safer through family-friendly innovations, like the new hop-scotch and art studios.

“One project I’m particularly looking forward to is the introduction of new public art around the Town Hall, which will brighten up the area and hopefully inspire new generations of local artists.”

Although some of the planned regeneration work has been put on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic, improvements have already been made around the town.

These include the opening of Space Studios, a hub for local artists to display their artwork, and work commencing on the installation of the timber frame for the Mercato Metropolitano outdoor food and drinks market.

The new Ilford Station Southern Entrance has also been completed, ready for the arrival of the Elizabeth Line (Crossrail) in 2022.

The station entrance will be opened once lockdown restrictions are eased.

It is anticipated that the new market will open late summer 2021, and new High Street paving will be completed by the autumn.
