Havering sailing club facing eviction from centre

Stubbers Young Mariners Sailing Club has trained young sailors to represent Havering at the London Youth Games.

A sailing club in Havering is facing eviction from the centre it has called home since 1892.

Stubbers Young Mariners Sailing Club is launching a legal challenge to fight being removed from Stubbers Activity Centre in Upminster.

Honorary secretary of the club, David Nissim, said they were told Stubbers Activity Centre wants to “remodel” following the Covid-19 pandemic and the sailing club no longer fits in with their plans.

He said they offered to not sail in summer, which is the busiest time of the year for paddle sports, but this offer was rejected.

Alongside its legal challenge, the club is also engaging with local MPs and councillors to fight the eviction.

The training club is recognised by the Royal Yachting Association and teaches people of all ages and abilities to sail safely and affordably.

It has its own fleet of 35 boats and is managed by volunteers. All of its instructors are Royal Yachting Association qualified.

Stubbers Young Mariners Sailing Club has trained young sailors to represent Havering at the London Youth Games.

It has also helped Cubs, Scouts, Guides, GCSE students, Duke of Edinburgh award candidates, and an Austistic Society group.

Another sailing club based in the centre is reportedly being evicted as well.
