Lucky escape for residents after Stratford flat fire

Residents in a block of flats in Stratford had a lucky escape after a fire broke out on the 17th floor.

London Fire Brigade (LFB) was called to the Leather Gardens estate, near Abbey Road DLR station, in the early hours of this morning after the blaze started just after 1am.

Emergency call handlers received no fewer than 26 calls as frantic residents reacted to the fire.

Around 100 people evacuated the building before firefighters arrived and no injuries were reported.

However the 17th floor flat where the fire broke out was completely destroyed.

A spokesperson for LFB said: “Eight fire engines and 58 firefighters and officers were called to a fire in a flat in Leather Gardens.

“The Brigade was called at 1.22am and the fire was under control at 2.52am.

“Fire engines from Stratford, Plaistow, Leyton, East Ham, Bethnal Green and surrounding fire stations attended the scene.

“The cause of the fire is under investigation.”
