52-year-old Desmond Sage from Rochford Avenue knocked at an address in Colson Road at 6.45pm on 26 June 2108 and grabbed a man by the throat when the door was opened.
Sage then pushed the man into his hallway and into a glass cabinet.
The victim managed to escape and run off but was chased by Sage who hit him with what is believed to be an extendable baton.
Sage was arrested a week later after he fled in a vehicle.
Investigating officer DC Robert Guiney, of Loughton CID, said: “Sage is around 6ft 7ins tall and of a heavy build and quickly overpowered the victim in his own home while armed with an extendable baton.
“The victim bravely tried to defend himself and suffered a number of cuts, including deep wound to one of his hands.
“I would like to praise him for his courage during our investigation and the subsequent trial.
“After gaining access to CCTV, it didn’t take long for us to identify the suspect as Sage, who faces a likely custodial sentence.”
Sage will be sentenced at Chelmsford Crown Court on 13 March.
