Picture: Tommy Tonner

A man has been jailed for four years after robbing a post office in Buckhurst Hill with a hammer.

Unemployed 29-year-old Tommy Tonner was sentenced at Chelmsford Crown Court on 22 February after pleading guilty to the offence on 13 February.

Shortly before 1pm on 2 January Tonner and another man entered the Post Office in Queen’s Road and threatened two staff members with a weapon.

Tonner then jumped over the counter demanded the till was opened.

The two of them went on to fill a bag with a four-figure sum of cash, including foreign currency, before fleeing.

Investigating officer DC Jo Pilcher, of Loughton CID, said: “Tonner and his accomplice threatened two members of staff with a hammer who were just innocently doing their job.

“Tonner has since been sentenced for his part in this incident and the investigation is continuing in relation to the other two suspects.

“This would have been a terrifying ordeal for the members of staff involved in this incident and I would like to thank them for their assistance during our investigation.”

A 36-year-old man from Romford and a 29-year-old woman from Pilgrims Hatch remain under investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to call Loughton CID quoting crime reference 42/793/19 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
