Councillor Edna Fergus took over the role from Councillor Peter Chand at a virtual ceremony last night (27 April).
Councillor Fergus has lived in the borough for 31 years and has previously worked in education, banking and for the NHS.
She has also been a school governor, chaired the Alibon Police Safer Neighbourhood Team Panel Meetings and was a member of the Independent Advisory Group to the police in Barking and Dagenham.
In her new role as mayor, Councillor Fergus will be raising money for her chosen charities, namely Refuge and Hestia.
Her Mayoress and Consorts will be her Daughter and Son in Law and Councillor Evelyn Carpenter and Councillor Muhammad Saleem.
