Romford BID set out plans for a ‘greener’ town centre

Two ‘Pocket Parks’ and ten green installations are planned for Romford town centre

Residents in Romford are being asked to support plans to improve public spaces and educate residents on greener living.

The proposals, put forward by Romford BID, include touring ‘Pocket Parks’ and a number of permanent green installations in the town centre.

Larger designs will incorporate greenery and seating with a children’s play area while smaller ones could see unused phones boxes filled with flowers and other greenery.

Brookside Theatre, St Edwards The Confessor church, Ciao Bella, Barclays and TfL have already offered potential sites for the installations.

There will also be ‘green trails’ to highlight eco-friendly services around Romford.

The developments are due to be co-designed with the community and workshops will take place to gain input from schools and local businesses.

It is hoped that the project will provide safe spaces and create a ‘multi-functional urban oasis’ for people of all ages.

It aims to inspire residents to explore Romford, encourage physical activity and look after the environment.

“With the publication of the roadmap out of lockdown, our focus must be on doing what we can to encourage shoppers, diners and socialisers back,” said Julie Frost, director of Romford BID.

“Bringing green spaces into the very heart of this space represents just one of the many ways that we can make Romford an attractive place to work, rest and play.

“Like the return of the spring flower, let’s get Romford ready for reopening!”

In order to progress to the next stage of development, the project will need to reach its £87,808 fundraising target before May.

So far, Romford BID has raised over £48,000 for Romford Pocket Parks and is calling for further support from the local community.

Havering Council have provisionally supported the plans, but the final approval is expected during the campaign.
