Romford has the most car thefts – with Ilford not far behind

Romford has the highest rate of reported car thefts, according to a new study from Money SuperMarket.

Data analysed between July 2017 and June 2018 looking at car insurance enquiries revealed there were 13.5 per 1000 people in the RM postcode area.

The IG postcode area, which includes Ilford and Barking, was close behind with 13.

People with E postcodes are also in danger with 7.2 per 1000 taking place in east London – meaning the area is the seventh worst-hit in the country.

Other areas that featured high on the list include Southend, Birmingham, and Halifax.

Those aged 30-49 are the most likely to report their car stolen, while those aged 17-19 years face the least risk.

Kevin Pratt, consumer affairs expert at MoneySuperMarket, comments: “Making sure your vehicle is protected with the right insurance is key to minimising the financial impact a theft can have – but prevention is always better than cure.

“No matter where you are in the UK, it’s important to defend your property against planned and opportunistic theft, whether of the vehicle itself or belongings left inside.

“There are simple steps drivers can take to enhance security and thwart criminals and if you can avoid having to make a claim on your insurance, you will protect your no claims discount and dodge a nasty hike in your premiums.

“If you do have to claim after a theft, make sure you shop around at next renewal. It might be possible to undercut your existing insurer by finding a competitive deal elsewhere.”
