Romford skip company fined for placing skip without permission

K&J Skip Hire did not have permission to put the skip on the highway at St Chads Gardens (Pic-LBBD)

A Romford based skip hire company has been fined over £1,000 after ignoring two Fixed Penalty Notices.

K&J Skip Hire Ltd were issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice, on 23 June 2020, by Barking and Dagenham’s enforcement officers after they placed a builders skip on the highway at St Chads Gardens in Chadwell Heath without permission.

They were then given a second fine for the same reason on 14 June of the same year; and were given 14 days to pay both fines.

The company failed to pay the two fines and were taken to court.

It was heard at Barkingside Magistrates Court on Tuesday, 15 February 2022 where K&J Skip Hire Ltd, who did not attend the court, were found guilty.

They were ordered to pay a £300 fine, £819 in costs to Barking and Dagenham Council and a Victim Surcharge of £34, totalling £1,153.

Councillor Margaret Mullane, Cabinet Member for Enforcement and Community Safety said: “This business has not only ignored the rules twice, but also ignored our enforcement action on both occasions. They clearly have no regard for the rules.

“All they had to do was pay a £100 fine and then follow the rules, but now they owe more than £1,000. I hope they have learnt their lesson.

“Placing a skip on the highway without permission from the local authority is an offence contrary to S139(3) Highways Act 1980.”
