Firefighters are dealing with a blaze on an industrial estate in Barking.
London Fire Brigade says it has received several calls, the first of which came in just before 1pm.
A spokesperson for McGrath, a waste management site, confirmed to Time 107.5 that the fire had started there.
Approximately 30 tonnes of refuse is alight.
Steve Norman, from London Fire Brigade, said: “River Road has been closed so we would advise motorists to avoid the area where possible.
“Crews are working hard to bring the fire under control to ensure the road can be reopened as soon as possible.”
Six fire engines have been sent to the blaze, and smoke from it can be seen from Romford.
