An 18-year-old man was arrested last night on suspicion of murdering Hussain Chaudhry.

He was taken to an east London police station where he remains in custody.

Hussain, a first-year student at London’s SOAS University died on Wednesday evening following the alleged attack on Lea Bridge Road, Walthamstow.

His sister Afia Ahmed Chaudhry posted a tribute on social media, writing: “His eyes were bright, his face showed no pain, he was at peace.”

A post-mortem examination held yesterday gave cause of death as hypovolemic shock and a stab wound to the neck.

The Metropolitan police confirmed a man in his 20s and a woman in her 40s – Hussain’s mother and brother – were found with “slash injuries to their hands”.

His mother remains in hospital but his brother has been discharged.

Hussain’s family said in a joint statement: “We are deeply grieved by the loss of our beloved Hussain and respectfully ask for the privacy and space to come to terms with this tragic situation. We thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts for their kindness, compassion, condolences, prayers and goodwill. We have no other comment at this time.”

A 16-year-old boy who was arrested in connection with the investigation on Wednesday, 17 March has been released under investigation.

DCI Perry Benton said: “A young man has lost his life in tragic circumstances and my thoughts remain with his family and friends at this awful time.

“I am continuing to appeal for any witnesses to come forward and speak with my team. Any piece of information could prove to be vital.”

The officer also said additional police would be called in to the area “to help reassure the community and listen to concerns from residents”.

DS Paul Whiteman, from the Waltham Forest unit, said: “We remain committed to tackling violent crime and we are working with a number of partners to help us prevent another tragic loss of life.

“We rely on the support of the local community.”
