Two women have been killed and a 10-year-old girl is in a critical condition in hospital after a crash on the M25.
An articulated lorry and an Audi collided near Waltham Abbey at around 11.20pm last night, with the HGV overturning on the embankment.
A 32-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
The road has been closed for much of this morning and delays are expected for much of the day.
A Highways England spokesperson said: “Lane one is to remain closed during the morning rush hour due to barrier damage and ongoing recovery of the HGV which has left the carriageway.
“Later this morning we anticipate that we would need to close lanes 2 and possibly 3 to recover the HGV.”
Enquiries into the collision and the events leading up to it are being led by Essex Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit.
