Two men have been found guilty of attempted murder after hitting a man with a car and then assaulting him with machetes in South Ockendon.

Jay Hurhsam, of Anton Road, and Talliq Mwalim, of Rosebury Gardens in Upminster were convicted after the attack which took place a little after midnight on 1 July 2020.

Bradley Dulieu, of Heathway, Dagenham, was found not guilty of murder but found guilty of GBH with intent following a trial at Basildon Crown Court on Monday, 20 December.

The victim, a man in his 20s, had been driving towards Arisdale Close at around 12:35am when he was being followed by a grey BMW X5.

Once he exited the car he tried to run away before being chased and hit by the car before Hursham and Mwalim got out of the car and assaulted the man with machetes.

The victim was taken to hospital with life-changing injuries.

They proceeded to get back into the car and drove off.

A witness to the assault was able to provide police with a partial registration plate, the car was then sighted in Brentwood by police a little after 01:0o.

The car failed to stop for police before a pursuit ensued, at one point they drove the wrong way on the A127 at 85mph.

Police were able to stop the car using a tactical manoeuvre brining the car to a halt in Rosebury Gardens, Upminster as two of those within the vehicle made off on foot.

Dulieu, the driver, was caught as he remained in the car whilst Mwalim was arrested after a short foot chase.

Hursham was found a short while later as he attempted to hide in a hot tub, whilst covered in the victim’s blood, at a nearby address.

Senior investigating officer Detective Superintendent Ross Natalia Ross said, “This was vicious and prolonged attack where there was a clear intent to kill the victim. His attackers had armed themselves, hunted him down, and used extreme violence to cause him significant injuries.

“The victim’s wounds were so serious, at one stage it looked as if he could have died, all three men now face a significant time behind bars and Essex will be a safer place for that.”

The trio are due to be sentenced at the same court on 28 March.
