The crash, on the anticlockwise carriageway near Junction 28 (A12 and Brook Street), had closed one lane but that has since reopened.
Traffic was queuing back towards Junction 30 (A13) and, at one point, was adding up to an hour to journey times.
Travel data provider Inrix said the incident cleared at around 8.10am today and traffic has now returned to normal.
