Barking and Dagenham Leader urges residents to follow tier advice

The Leader of Barking and Dagenham Council is urging residents to “remain at home” and “only travel when it is essential to do so.”

Tier 4 restrictions came into force across London, including in Barking & Dagenham and Havering as of one minute past midnight yesterday.

The new restrictions mean people in Tier 4 areas must stay at home, apart from limited exemptions set out in law.

Non-essential retail, indoor gyms and leisure facilities, and personal care services must also close.

The government Tier 4 restrictions also mean:

-People in Tier 4 areas should not mix with anyone outside their own household at Christmas. Support bubbles will remain in place for those at particular risk of loneliness or isolation.

-People must work from home if they can, but may travel to work if this is not possible, for example in the construction and manufacturing sectors.

-People should not enter or leave tier 4 areas, and must not stay overnight away from home. Individuals can only meet one person from another household in an outdoor public space.

-Communal worship can continue to take place in Tier 4 areas.

-People in Tier 4 areas will not be permitted to travel abroad apart from limited exceptions, such as for work purposes.

Cllr Darren Rodwell

The Leader of Barking and Dagenham Council, Cllr Darren Rodwell said: “The news that people in the borough, along with the rest of London and other parts of the country, are being asked to miss loved ones over Christmas is heart breaking.

“Although I support the steps the government is taking, it comes at the eleventh hour despite stark warnings from Public Health England, London Councils, and the Mayor for London.

“We all knew infection rates were rising sharply, particularly in London and the south east, and that the lockdown introduced earlier in the month had not worked. That is why we called for a circuit breaker.

“Many people have been confused by the government’s messages, and it is clear the tier system has not worked. Everyone had plans in place for Christmas and this will make things worse. Nonetheless, as the leader of the council I must do what is right by the borough.

“I know it is difficult, but I would urge residents to follow the advice of remaining at home and only travel when it is essential to do so.

“If you are alone over Christmas and need support, help is available from our BDCAN at www.lbbd.gov.uk/let-us-know-if-you-need-help-or-support or ring the council on 020 8215 3000. You can also contact your ward councillors at www.lbbd.gov.uk/your-councillors

“You can also contact me on Facebook or Twitter at @CllrDRodwell and I will do what I can to support you or your ward councillors.

“I want to thank everyone who is doing their bit. The roll out of a vaccine brings hope for the new year. But for now, I would repeat my message that, the best Christmas present you can give your loved ones is to see them in 2021.”
