Picture: Nick lost his leg a year ago and has praised the help and support he’s got from Blesma
Nick served with the army in Northern Ireland and lost his leg a year ago.
It’s not quite known what the cause was, but he says it could have been because of some shrapnel left in his leg after an incident while on tour in Northern Ireland.
Nick says, “One morning, I couldn’t walk and after years of tests they found I had got nerve, ligament and tendon damage. They’re not sure if I had shrapnel left over from one of my tours of duty and in the end the decision was made to take my leg so I wasn’t in pain anymore and could walk again.”
He contacted Blesma after seeing a poster for them when getting his prosthetic made and joined the charity a few months later. “They’re there to support me, help me and my family through the tough times and for the rest of my life with prosthetic needs. They help me to maintain myself mentally and keeping strong after losing a limb and supporting me in lots of different ways.”
Nick is now walking and getting back into cycling and other sports thanks to Blesma and getting together with other amputees.
