Emergency services were called to Newport Avenue at 5.15am this morning (Monday, 10 July).
A man was pronounced dead at the scene by the London Ambulance Service.
A ground floor room was damaged by the fire which was under control by around 6.30am.
Crews from Plaistow, East Ham and Poplar fire station attended the scene.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Brigade and the Metropolitan Police Service.
