Officers were called to reports of an incident at Louise Gardens last night just before 20:00 where they found a man unresponsive.
Despite the best best efforts of paramedics the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
A woman has also been taken to hospital due to injuries to her wrist.
A Met spokesperson said, “Police were called at 19:53hrs on Wednesday, 1 December to Louise Gardens, Rainham, following reports of a disturbance in the street involving a group of people, officers attended with paramedics.
“A woman was found with an injury to her wrist. She has been taken to hospital; we await an assessment of her condition.
“A man, aged in his 30s, was also found unresponsive. Despite the efforts of paramedics he was pronounced dead at the scene.
“Work is ongoing to determine the man’s identity and ensure next of kin are informed.
“A crime scene is in place and officers are working to understand the full circumstances.”
They also added that at this point nobody has been arrested but anybody with any information has been asked to come forward.
