60 new rented homes have been made available to residents in Barking and Dagenham.
The flats near Ripple Road in Barking also come with white goods including a fridge, washing machine and a built-in cooker.
Rents are below the market rate with the homes are aimed at people that don’t qualify for council houses.
Each flat is available to rent on an initial one-year introductory tenancy, followed by a five-year assured shorthold agreement.
Councillor Cameron Geddes, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Social Housing, said “The council housing of yesterday – where it was easy to get on the housing register and get a property is gone – not just in Barking and Dagenham but across the country.
“We’re adapting to the tough housing climate by offering residents different choices – and rental options at a price they can afford so that they can choose to live in this area, near their friends and family, but without breaking the bank or getting into debt.”
The monthly rent for a one-bedroom apartment is £880 and two-bedroom properties are £1,120, with the rent including all services charges.
The properties are managed by Reside, a council created company created to provide renting for people who don’t qualify for traditional council housing but want an alternative to privately renting.
Cllr Geddes added: “The rents have been set at levels that mean the properties are not out of reach for residents on lower incomes – so whether you’re a couple working full-time in retail or a full-time bus driver with a child and a partner who works part-time and receives child benefit and tax credit, you can still have a choice other than privately renting.
“We’d love to be able to offer more properties like this and at even cheaper rents, but, until the Government starts to seriously tackle the housing shortage, we will struggle to do so.”
