The IG area code will also get eight of the new boxes as part of the nationwide rollout which overall will see 1,400 brought in across the UK.
It is the first major change to postboxes in the last 160 years since they were introduced in the 1850s.
The change means small businesses and marketplace sellers will be able to post pre-paid parcels through the securely designed parcel postboxes, in the same way they currently post a letter, and offers an alternative to using their local Post Office.
Security is the forefront of the new boxes and they have been built to make it impossible to reach in when it’s open and also closed.
Mark Street from Royal Mail said: “As you’d imagine, they’re still the iconic shade of red and they’re much bigger as you’d expect. There’s a handle you pull down and you put the parcel inside, up to 2kg, then you close it and it drops securely into the main body of the post box.
“Anyone who’s ordered stuff online, maybe it doesn’t fit, maybe it’s not quite the right size and you need to send it back, now as long as it’s got a royal mail barcode on it, then you’ll be able to use these royal mail parcel boxes too.”
