Stuart McLaughlin is travelling to Australia this month
Stuart McLaughlin, from Bower Park Academy, is flying out there this month to try and bring in teachers for schools across the borough.
The process will involve meeting candidates who have been pre-vetted by an Australian recruitment team. Mr McLaughlin will then be matching suitable candidates to the borough’s schools’ specifications.
Successful applicants will be invited to live with local families to help them to integrate into school and community life.
Emphasis in the search will be for English, Maths and Science teachers for Havering’s secondary schools and main scale primary teachers.
Mr McLaughlin said: “Havering faces a problem in the sense that the population is increasing so we need more teachers at a time when it’s difficult to recruit anyway.
“The advantage of Australia is that it has a surplus of teachers so it seems like a good idea to go there and see if we can recruit some strong candidates.
“If I bring back candidates to start working in Havering schools, what we hope is that they’re going to stay around for a couple of years and they’ll be a talent pool that will be there for schools to draw on.”
Mr McLaughlin will be sharing his journey via a video diary and short clips on social media.
