Lorry deaths: Man arrested in Dublin “a person of interest”

The victims’ bodies were discovered on the Waterglade Industrial Park last Wednesday

Essex Police says a man arrested in Dublin on Saturday is “a person of interest” into the investigation into the deaths of 39 people found in a lorry near Lakeside.

The man was arrested by the Garda at the weekend for an unconnected matter.

A spokesperson for Essex Police said officers are liaising with their Irish counterparts over the phone.

All of the victims, who were found in the back of a lorry container on Wednesday, 23 October, have been transported to a mortuary at Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford.

Maurice Robinson, 25, of Laurel Drive, Craigavon, Northern Ireland, is due to appear at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court today charged with 39 counts of manslaughter, conspiracy to traffic people, conspiracy to assist unlawful immigration, and money laundering.

Three other people who have been arrested – a man and woman, who are both aged 38 and from Warrington, and a 46-year-old man from Northern Ireland – have been bailed.
