Councillors with police and staff at the campaign’s launch event at the Slug and Lettuce
People who feel unsafe or uncomfortable in situations are being encouraged to go to the bar and Ask for Angela.
It’s a discreet code-word and staff will take the person asking for help away from any potential threat and offer to call a taxi so they can leave safely.
Local police and Havering Council have worked together on the campaign, which originally started three years ago in Lincolnshire.
Councillor Viddy Persaud, Havering’s cabinet member for public protection and safety, said: “This simple but effective initiative empowers members of the public to seek help safely if they are feeling vulnerable in a pub or club.
“They can feel safe in the knowledge that staff, security, and police are all prepared to act discreetly and effectively in situations where they may otherwise feel trapped.”
“I hope that the Ask for Angela posters displayed in these venues will give both men and women the confidence to ask for help and support if it is needed.
“We will continue to work closely with the police and local venues to ensure that nightlife in Havering is safe, fun and a positive experience for everyone.”
