Daggers appoint Daryl McMahon as new manager

McMahon, left, with Daggers’ managing director Steve Thompson

Dagenham & Redbridge has appointed Daryl McMahon as the club’s new manager, a day after he left League Two strugglers Macclesfield.

The 36-year-old replaces Peter Taylor who was sacked following last weekend’s 3-0 defeat to Bromley.

Daggers executive chairman Peter B. Freund said: “Daryl was our first choice from the moment we started this process and we are thrilled that he has agreed to lead the Daggers moving forward and into the future.”

The Irishman has been in management since 2015, taking charge of Ebbsfleet between April of that year and November 2018.

He then became boss at Macclesfield in August 2019, but left the role yesterday amid financial issues at the club.

His assistant at Macclesfield, Steve Gritt, also departed but it is not yet clear if he will join McMahon at Victoria Road.

In a statement yesterday, Macclesfield said: “We are taking advice from our legal team in relation to this and will provide a further update as soon as possible.”

McMahon will be in the stands at the Chigwell Construction Stadium for tomorrow’s National League game against Torquay.

His first match in charge will be the FA Trophy second round tie away at Notts County next Saturday.

As a teenager, McMahon was part of West Ham’s academy and lived in Romford. He went on to play for Leyton Orient and Port Vale, as well as a host of non-league clubs.
