Public Health England has released the data today
National newspapers reported yesterday that the two boroughs were at risk of going into a local lockdown due to increases in the rate of infections.
But those suggestions were dismissed by Havering and Barking & Dagenham, with Mark Ansell – the Director of Public Health for Havering – saying the borough was “nowhere near the levels where a lockdown would even be considered.”
And the views of the two authorities have been now been supported by new data published by Public Health England, which has published a list of the latest Covid-19 rates for areas across the nation.
Leicester, which has this week gone into a local lockdown, has 140.2 cases per 100,000 population.
Havering has a rate of 1.9 and in Barking & Dagenham it is just 1.4, which are far lower than nearby areas.
Those figures include tests carried out in laboratories (‘pillar 1’ of the Government’s testing programme) and in the wider community (‘pillar 2’) for the week ending June 21.
Until now, only ‘pillar 1’ had been made available.
Thurrock has the highest rate of cases in our local area, with 12.2 cases per 100,000 people in the borough.
Across the county of Essex, excluding the unitary authorities of Thurrock and Southend-on-Sea, the rate is 5.8.
In Redbridge, the figure is 3.6.
