Father given hospital order for killing his children in Aldborough Hatch

Pavinya and Nigish Nithiyakumar were killed by their father in April

A shopkeeper from Aldborough Hatch, who killed his daughter and son while suffering from a delusional disorder, has been given an indefinite hospital order.

Nadarajah Nithiyakumar, 41, fatally stabbed infants Pavinya and Nigish in the flat above their shop in Aldborough Parade in April.

He was sentenced today at the Old Bailey.

Speaking about Nigish and Pavinya in a statement read in court, their mother said: “After my children were born I was the happiest woman in the world, every minute of my time I spent with my kids, these were my happiest moments. They were both my world and my future ambitions and my life surrounded them. I spent all my time with them. Of course, they loved their dad but they were very close to me and we did everything together. I have lost all those dreams and aspirations I had for them.

“Nigish was such an active boy; he just started to speak recently and was a very clever child. He never was any trouble and the perfect child. He was playful and loved to be outside playing and watching the buses and cars going by. He loved his building blocks and toy bus; I so miss watching him play with his toys.

“Pavinya was a blessing and miracle. She was a beautiful child who was the opposite to Nigish, she would make a lot of noise when she played and was very happy and messy in her play and smiled a lot.

“I loved my children so very much and expected great things for them and I wanted them to be happy and be their own heroes in whatever they did. They made me so happy and proud.”

The children’s mother was in the shower at the time of the attack and called emergency services upon discovering what had happened.

Nadarajah Nithiyakumar has been given an indefinite hospital order

Paramedics rushed to the address but 19-month-old Pavinya was pronounced dead at the scene.

Nigish was taken to the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel but also passed away due to his injuries.

Nadarajah was also found suffering injuries and went to hospital but he was subsequently discharged and arrested by police.

Separate psychological evaluations for both the prosecution and defence indicated that the father has been suffering with mental health problems at the time of the killings.

At court in October, he pleaded guilty to manslaughter by diminished responsibility and was sentenced today to a hospital order under Section 37 of the Mental Health Act, with a restriction under Section 41 of the Mental Health Act for an indefinite period.

Devi Kharran, Senior Crown Prosecutor for the Crown Prosecution Service, said: “This was a tragic case in which a loving and devoted mother had her two children cruelly taken away from her. The man responsible for killing them was trusted to keep them safe and his wife had no reason to believe he was preparing to commit such awful crimes. She was in the shower at the time of this incident. She was completely unaware that he was at the time suffering from a delusional disorder which led him to take the terrible decision to kill his children, in a misguided attempt to protect them, before attempting to kill himself.

“The CPS accepted the views of three medical experts that he was clearly driven to this by a serious medical disorder. Throughout this case the prosecution and the police have supported the children’s mother through what have been very traumatic and difficult court proceedings. Our thoughts remain with her at this time.”
