Emergency services were called to a 20-year-old man suffering from a stab wound on Marlands Road at 3.54pm yesterday.
The victim was taken by the London Ambulance Service to an east London hospital.
He remains in a serious but stable condition.
A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 3.56pm on 11 March to reports a person injured on Marlands Road, Ilford.
“We sent an ambulance crew, two medics in cars, and an incident response officer.
“A man was treated at the scene and taken to a major trauma centre as a priority.”
The 12-year-old boy was arrested nearby in connection with the assault. He remains in custody at an east London police station.
A knife was recovered at the scene.
Enquiries into the incident are continuing.
