Hornchurch’s Hop Inn is officially the best pub in London for the second time in a row.

The Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) has named the North Street micropub as the winner of its London Pub of the Year award for 2022.

CAMRA sent judges from 13 different London regions to test the quality of the beer and cider at the establishment. They also rated the service, hygiene, staff knowledge and atmosphere.

The Hop Inn has also won a separate accolade for being the best pub in London to drink cider in.

It is owned by local couple Alison Taffs and Phil Cooke. They are hospitality veterans with a background in restaurants but this is their first pub venture.

Alison said: “The judges focus on the quality of welcome, staff knowledge and skill, we are lucky to have a team who are all passionate about drinks and love looking after people; we prioritise training on the drinks with them, and they do the rest, with relish!”

Phil explained that they carefully choose each of the 80 drinks they serve, which include gins, wines and whiskies.

“As well as being obsessed with the quality of our cask ale, craft beer, cider and curating a wide list of other quality drinks, we just love giving people a fantastic and personal experience when they come and see us,” said Phil.

“We’ve a group of wonderful, loyal local regulars and they are our lifeblood. The team love sourcing special drinks from small and craft producers to encourage people to find their new favourite.”
