A member of staff reported they’d found an individual badly hurt on the station floor at 4.30am this morning (Tuesday, 27 February).
Emergency services, including the Metropolitan Police Service and London Ambulance Service, attended where a person was found with extensive injuries.
Despite the efforts of emergency crews, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
A man has been arrested in connection and remains in police custody this morning.
Detective Chief Inspector Sam Blackburn said: “This act of unprovoked violence was despicable. The investigation remains in the early stages, and although though we are satisfied that this was an isolated incident the station will remain closed while we continue our enquiries.
“Anyone who witnessed the incident or is able to help us piece together the events leading up to it is asked to text 61016 or call 0800 40 50 40, quoting reference 53 of 27/02/24. Alternatively, you can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
Superintendent Simon Hutchison of the Met’s East Area Command said: “We are currently supporting our British Transport Police [BTP] colleagues in response to a death at Harold Wood station this morning, Tuesday, 27 February.
“We know that BTP investigators believe this was an isolated incident and that a suspect has been arrested and is in custody at an east London police station. They are not seeking any other suspects at this time.
“I know that the local community will be shocked by this incident and that concerns will be raised locally. We continue to work with community leads to provide reassurance.”
