Pop-up shop opened in Romford to promote safety this Christmas

Havering Council has launched its annual community safety pop-up shop in The Brewery, Romford.

Among those taking part are London Fire Brigade, Havering Borough Police, Havering’s community safety team, Safer Transport, the road safety team, Victim Support, Westminster Drug Project, as well as many others.

The shop is situated in the old JD Sports store and will be open on weekdays until Friday, 21 December between 11.30am to 2pm, and will be providing advice and information on how residents can keep themselves safe over the festive season.

Councillor Viddy Persaud said: “We’re here to raise awareness about being safe at this time of the year. We were lucky to be given this space for the next two weeks and we have a number of organisations who are helping residents to keep safe this festive season.

“At Christmas, we’ve all saved, we’re buying presents for each other and we have them around at home. Other people want our stuff so we’re trying to stop them from coming into our space and taking the things that we, the residents of Havering, have worked hard for.

“We want to offer as much support to our diverse community as possible. They’re being advised to keep lights on at home, make sure their bags are closed and to simply stay safe.”

The space has been provided free of charge by The Brewery and is being supported by the Safer Neighbourhood Board.

Tom Stobbart, Centre Manager for The Brewery, said: “We love to support anything that the community safety team does, as they do so much for us throughout the year in helping to keep the town centre safe. The shop is located in a prime position to reach the thousands of people passing through Romford each day.”
