A man in his 70s passed away following the collision, which happened in the early hours of this morning.
It happened near the junction of Main Road and Jubilee Avenue, in the Broomfield area of Chelmsford, at around 2.50am today.
Emergency services rushed there but the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.
Essex Police says the taxi driver, a 35-year-old man from Hornchurch, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving.
He remains in police custody.
Investigators are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
