New plans could save A&E at King George Hospital

Plans to stop the closure of the Accident and Emergency department at King George Hospital are being considered this week.

A report says a new “fit-for-purpose” model for emergency care is needed and current plans to shut down the service must be reviewed.

They were originally approved in 2011 by then Conservative Health Secretary, Andrew Lansley.

“However, it never happened because this was always a mad idea,” said Ilford South MP, Mike Gapes.

“It was never clinically safe to do so.

“There was never enough capacity or beds at other local hospitals, including Queens Hospital in Romford, to cope.”

He has campaigned to “Save King George Hospital” since the first proposals were made in 2006.

A new proposition to lift the closure will be looked into by the Joint Committee of Clinical Care Groups for Barking and Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge on Thursday 31 January.

“At last we can now see the light at the end of the tunnel.

“Once the decision is taken to lift the threat of closure we can have sensible planning of better health and social care facilities on the King George site and continuing emergency provision must be an essential part of that.”
