Desmond Sage, of Rochford Avenue, Loughton, was found guilty by a jury at Chelmsford Crown Court on Wednesday.
In June last year, Sage knocked at an address in Colson Road and grabbed a man by the throat before pushing the victim into his hallway and into a glass cabinet.
The victim managed to escape and run off but was chased and struck with what is believed to be an extendable baton.
Sage, 52, drove off but was arrested a week later.
Investigating officer DC Robert Guiney, of Loughton CID, said: “Sage has continued to deny the offences, despite the overwhelming evidence against him.
“Sage carried out a violent attack on a man in his own home while armed with a weapon.
“The victim bravely defended himself against Sage, and received injuries to his arms and hands.
“I would like continue to praise him for his courage and I hope this outcome offers some justice to him.”
Sage also received five years for grievous bodily harm with intent and two years and five months for possession of an offensive weapon, to run concurrently.
