Respect Havering police campaign launched

A campaign has been launched in Havering encouraging people to show police more respect.

Members of Havering Safe Streets, a local Facebook group which monitors crime in the area, have started the “Respect the Police” scheme which aims to let police know that their work and effort is appreciated by residents.

Linda Mathieson, from Rise Park, suggested doing something after seeing officers subjected to vile abuse while on a patrol recently.

“I was appalled, shocked by people’s behaviour,” she told Time 107.5. “The police were absolutely amazing.

“I can’t say the words (that were said to the officers) but they were very disrespectful. There is no need for that behaviour.”

Fellow Safe Streets member, Ian Taylor, said: “Havering is sadly seeing an increase in crime, a reduction in the police force, increased levels of violence towards the police and a lack of respect which is eroding our area and sadly our country.

“We don’t want to just sit back and watch this happen.”

Linda says even a few kind words can help boost officers’ morale and she wants people to say “thank you for protecting us” and let police know if you support them.

She also feels that, with the summer holidays almost upon us, it is important to teach children about work of the police so they understand the need to respect officers.
