The crash happened as children left school this afternoon
Five others were injured in the crash this afternoon.
Police are urgently trying to locate the driver and car, a silver Ford KA, which were involved in the incident.
In a statement, Essex Police said: “We were called just after 3.20pm this afternoon to reports that a number of pedestrians had been involved in an incident with a silver KA on Willingale Road.
“A 12-year-old local boy was taken to hospital, where he sadly died.”
Two 15-year-old boys, one 13-year-old boy, one 16-year-old girl and a 23-year-old woman were also injured.
None of them are believed to have suffered life-changing or life-threatening injuries.
The teenagers are all thought to be students at Debden High School, in Willingale Road.

Detective Chief Inspector Rob Kirby, of the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate, said: “This has been a truly shocking incident and my deepest sympathies are with all those involved.
“I would like to thank the many members of the public who have called us with information and spoken to our officers, as well as those who provided crucial medical assistance at the scene.
“I would urge anyone with information, dash cam footage, or who may have seen anything on social media that they think could be crucial, to call us on 101 and quote incident number 726 of 2 December.”
