The £14 million expansion of the Elective Surgical Hub at King George Hospital, which will include two new theatres, is taking shape.

Work at the Ilford based hospital got underway last November and with the foundations, concrete floor and substructure complete, the outline of the new building is emerging.

The expansion, which also includes upgraded staff facilities, improved storage, and double the number of recovery beds, is due to be completed by next spring.

Once operational, the new theatres will allow the hospital to undertake 100 additional operations each week, helping to further reduce waiting lists.

The contractors from Neilcott are currently completing the concrete frame and have finished the structure of the ground floor, where staff changing, storage and office facilities will be based, as well as the first floor, where the new theatres will be.

Work on the top floor is now taking place which is where the plant with behind-the-scenes machinery will be located.

Once the outside of the building is complete, the contractors will work on turning the inner shell into specific rooms.

Internal works within the existing hub will take place from July to reconfigure spaces and make the recovery area much larger.

Director of Clinical Services Reconfiguration, Vikki Butler said: “Work has been underway for several months now so it’s an exciting time to see the shape of the building begin to form.

“This is a huge investment for local people and once completed, these new, modern facilities will help future proof our hub, allowing it to house the latest technology, including surgical robotics.”
