More than £10 million given to help rough sleepers in Greater London self-isolate

Sadiq Khan has also praised volunteer workforce working with most vulnerable Londoners during crisis

More than £10 million has been committed to ensure rough sleepers across Greater London are able to self-isolate during the pandemic.

Funding given by the Mayor and the Government, will provide the homeless with hotel accommodation and support.

Launched three weeks ago, the initiative involves City Hall working with Government and charity bodies to block-book rooms, allowing highly vulnerable rough sleepers to follow Government self-isolation guidelines.

Several hotel groups have allowed their premises to be used including The InterContinental Hotel Group, Travelodge, Best Western and Accor Group.

Black cab drivers have also volunteered to transport people between services.

Three meals a day are being supplied to residents by catering company, Red Radish.

The first hotel for rough sleepers with Covid-19 symptoms is also opening in east London from this week.

The specialist Covid-19 care facility will monitor their symptoms while ensuring they can receive appropriate care and medical support.

Homeless charity St Mungo’s is overseeing the rough sleeper support aspect of the operation, with support also being provided by Depaul, Thames Reach and Look Ahead.

Change Grow Live is providing specialist substance misuse support across the hotels for those residents who require it.

Much existing accommodation available to rough sleepers, while vitally important, is unsuitable for self-isolation.

The Mayor and the Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government will be supporting all the necessary work with the £10.55m funding.
