A former care home has been transformed into flats for rough sleepers in Ilford.

18 high needs supported homes have been developed as part of the Ryedale Scheme on Ilford Lane.

The self-contained studios will be let to local homeless people on 2 year leases.

The flats are ‘ready to move in’ and there will be communal areas and specialist staff to provide support and help occupants move towards independent living.

Leader of Redbridge Council, Cllr Jas Athwal, said, “We’re committed to ending rough sleeping in Redbridge by providing sustainable and affordable housing and support for those who experience homelessness.

“The Ryedale Scheme exemplifies our approach, providing a long-term legacy of support to those unfortunate enough to have been made homeless.

“We will continue to work with our partners to prevent homelessness and resolve the root causes of homelessness in the borough.”

The Greater London Authority has contributed £2.5 million towards the project.

£1 million has been used to renovate the building and the remainder is due to be spent on high needs support and maintenance over the next 4 years.

The first residents are set to move in this week, will all flats expected to be filled by the end of May.

If you know someone sleeping rough, you can contact Street Link on 0300 500 0914.
