Dagenham cosmetics company fined over £25,000 for incorrectly labelling products

The company were caught selling cosmetic products without labels

A Dagenham cosmetics company has been fined over £25,000 for incorrectly labelling ingredients on products.

Crystal Cosmetics Ltd, based on the Heathway, was caught selling cosmetic products without labels showing the name and address of the person responsible for safety.

Some products also didn’t have the correct ingredients listed.

There were also two further offences concerning restricted and prohibited substances, within the cosmetic products they had on sale.

The company was previously one of four businesses convicted in Barking and Dagenham during March 2016 at Barkingside Magistrates Court, for dealing in unsafe cosmetic products.

Trading Standard officers returned to the shop on Wednesday, 5 July 2017 and discovered that they were breaking the law again.

Crystal Cosmetics appeared at Snaresbrook Crown Court on 20 January 2019. The store’s owners pleaded guilty to four offences under the Cosmetics Product Enforcement Regulations 2013.

The company and its director, Mr Mohammad Afzaal, were fined £2000 and ordered to pay £10,000 to the council.

Instructions have been given that both need to be paid in six months and a £13,344.38 confiscation order must be paid within three months.

If the defendants fail to make the payments, then a six month prison sentence will be given.

Cabinet Member for Enforcement and Community Safety, Councillor Margaret Mullane, said: “What a great result this is and shows that our initiative to continually check on already convicted companies, works.

“Hopefully this will show other business owners that we don’t accept behaviour like this, and we won’t hesitate to take action.”
