The dual carriageway was blocked heading eastbound near Canning Town for several hours while a search was carried out to recover “ammunition and ancillary items.”
A Met Police spokesperson told Time 107.5: “Enquiries established that the items were police issue and that they had been placed on the roof of an armed response vehicle and subsequently fell off when officers were responding to support other colleagues on a firearms operation.
“The Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards has been informed and have established that this was human error and the officer concerned has been spoken to and will be subject to an internal learning process.”
The spokesperson apologised for the disruption caused to drivers on the A13 and also thanked them for their cooperation.
Police first closed the road at around 10.30am yesterday, with officers pictured walking in a line along the road to look for the ammunition.
The road was still shut at 9.30pm last night according to local newspaper The Newham Recorder, although it is understood the road has since reopened.
