Have you been a victim of blackmail? (Credit: Snappygoat)
A blackmailer has been disguising his number to threaten Londoners with violence.
The Metropolitan Police are asking anyone who thinks they might have fallen prey to the man’s “various tactics” to come forward.
Detectives say he can make his telephone number appear the same as a contact of his victims to trick them into answering the call.
DC Michael Beskine said his “method is frightening” and his behaviour “is aggressive”.
“Sometimes he has stated that victims owe money to him or that they owe money to a third party, or even that someone known to them owes money to a third party. We have identified two victims – neither of whom made payments to the man – but there are likely to be other victims who have not yet come forward.”
He said the criminal, who has a British accent, threatens his victims with violence against them and their loved ones.
A man has been charged in connection with the investigation, which has identified one group of victims in east London and another group in Bedfordshire.
